Gen X
Its really frightening to see how parents pressurize their children these days.I still remember how my parents, specially mom, used to boost us (i.e. me and bro) after a relatively bad performance in exams. But now parents are more worried than their children during exams. Perhaps being a teacher has brought me closer to the students of this gen who i feel are crushed beyond all limits.Apart from initiating children to books from as early an age as 2+ or 3, they try to see all their own unfulfilled dreams fulfilled through their children. As such, students are supposed to be the first boy or girl as well as be an expert in drawing, music, drama, swimming, sports and the list goes on and on. Meanwhile, the most precious moments of their life are being taken away from them.
I do feel that today's world has become all the more demanding, but every step of life has its own beauty, which passed cannot be retrieved back. I remember Davies' lines : "What is this life, if full of care/we have no time to stand and stare". Wonder what he would write seeing the world of today.
Only yesterday, the parents of a 5+ kid asked me to teach her to write small compositions in English, which incidentally is a foreign language in this country.I say, what the hell are they thinking? Or are they thinking at all? Does they see the next Prime Minister or President in her? Sorry, I refused. Every step has its own time. Let them think whatever they want to. I dont care.
